Staining & timber

Staining and timber finishes that bring wood back to life

Cedar cladding, decks, fences and handrails, cleaned, prepped and re-stained for a rich, even finish that protects the timber.

Natural timber

Timber looks its best when it’s looked after

Stained timber has a warmth paint can’t match, but it needs regular care. Sun and rain break stain down faster than paint, and once timber goes grey and dry it starts to check and split.

A re-stain at the right time keeps cedar and other timbers protected and looking rich. We clean the surface, deal with mould and weathered fibres, and apply quality stain systems evenly, board by board, so there are no blotchy laps or patchy ends.

What we stain and finish

  • Cedar weatherboards and shingles
  • Decks and steps
  • Timber fences and gates
  • Handrails and balustrades
  • Pergolas and outdoor structures
  • Timber joinery and doors

Dark colours and Resene Cool Cote

Dark stains look stunning on cedar, but they soak up heat. Products using Resene’s Cool Colour technology reflect more of the sun’s heat, which helps reduce stress on the timber. On a recent Epsom job we painted and re-stained the house in a black Resene Cool Cote finish. Brian’s verdict: “They were not the cheapest quotation that I got but am pleased I went with them.”

Paint or stain?

If your cedar has been painted before or is badly weathered, re-staining isn’t always possible. We’ll look at the timber, tell you honestly what will work, and explain the trade-offs before you decide.

Staining FAQs

Timber questions

How often does cedar need re-staining?

It depends on how exposed the walls are and the colour used. Sunny, north-facing walls weather faster than sheltered ones. Once the colour fades or water stops beading on the surface, it’s time to look at a re-stain.

Can you change the colour of my stained cedar?

Going darker is usually straightforward. Going much lighter is harder with a stain. We’ll look at your timber and talk you through what’s realistic.

Do you stain decks and fences on their own?

Yes. Decks, fences and handrails are popular standalone jobs, and they’re easy to add on when we’re already painting the house.
